Marshall Street Barracks was built in 1913 and used by the Transvaal Scottish Regiment but the city doesn't see value in this structure, and plenty others in the CBD, and have left it in this state since 2002. The reason I'm lashing at the City is that they are the drivers of what's happening in the CBD and even if the buildings are owned by the private sector or even the government, they have to drive all of them to take care of their assets.
This photos were taken last saturday. Please tell me why this property was never sold to Olitzki who have turned the City around. Here's another interesting article, http://www.joburg.org.za/content/view/4337/254/

I never got down to this part of Marshall Street. It is indeed a shame that the city allows the baracks to stay abandoned and boarded up like this.
Oi vey! the city just doesn't seem very good at looking after their heritage buildings. I suppose they consider providing housing etc for the poor more important, but I think that they could convert these barracks into something sustainable - a structure that benefits the poor in Joburg through skills development, for instance.
